  • Planning Your Reception

    Guests arrival and start time.

Usually it is appropriate to have music playing when your guests arrive at the reception venue. Even if your guests are served pre dinner drinks in another room or part of the venue it is best if the equipment is set up before they arrive.

    Bridal Party Entry.

After walking down the aisle this is the most anticipated entry you will make. It is not often you get to choose the music that is playing when you walk into a room so make the most of it. Choose a song that reflects and celebrates how you feel about being together and how it feels to have all these people here to share it with you.

    Grace.

If you have a religious ceremony or any of your family are religious it may be nice to ask the minister or a family member to ask the blessing for the meal.

    Speeches.

Traditionally speeches take place after the meal is finished and cleared away. Or if you prefer you may decide to have the speeches before the meal comes out or even during desert to save time for dancing. Whatever you choose it is important to let your speakers know when they need to be ready. The order of speeches is up to you.

Here are the traditional and modern order of speeches to give you some ideas.

    Traditional

    1. Toast to Bride and Groom by a friend
    2. Response and toast to the Bridal party by the Groom
    3. Response on behalf of Bridal party by the best man
    4. Toast to the Brides parents by friend of the Brides family
    5. Response by the father of the Bride
    6. Toast to the Grooms parents by friend of the Grooms family
    7. Response by the father of the Groom
    8. Special messages/telegrams/faxes/emails/cards read by groomsmen

    Modern

    1. Father of the Bride
    2. Father of the Groom
    3. Best man
    4. Groom and/or Bride
    5. Telegrams read by groomsmen

    Dancing

The job of any DJ at a wedding is to keep people dancing. At a wedding there are people from every generation and therefore it is important to play music from every era. A good mix of hits from yesteryear and new music that everyone can enjoy is essential.

    Garter and Bouquet

It is almost the end of the night and this is the last formality before you say goodbye. Watch the guys jump for the garter and the girls wrestle for the bouquet.

    Farewell

This is the time when you get to say goodbye to everyone individually. Sometimes the day can go by so quickly that it may be the only chance you have to speak to some people. It can take some time so choose a couple of good sing along songs to keep people occupied while they are waiting for you. The attached run sheet is included as a guide only. It is completely flexible and many of the items are optional. Most importantly there are no rules for how you plan your wedding reception, except...

    HAVE FUN!
